Schwob Frères trademarked a number of brand names over the years and developed an extensive overseas distribution network to market and sell their watches. They purchased ébauches (bare movements), cases, dials and hands and assembled these into watches. Schwob Frères (Schwob Brothers) was founded in 1862 in La Chaux-de-Fonds by Joseph and Theodore Schwob as an établisseur, an assembler of watches. This was named after the small Jura mountain municipality of Tavannes in the French-speaking Swiss canton of Bern. In 1891 Henri Sandoz founded the Tavannes Watch Co. Schwob Frères has disappeared completely. The brand Tavannes has been resuscitated. The Sandoz brand continues to this day used by at least four different companies around the world. Henri departed from the company in 1891 for unknown reasons and another family member, Jules Sandoz, continued the business. The Tavannes Watch Company entered into a partnership with Schwob Frères for sales and marketing, and the brand Cyma was created for this purpose. Henri later founded a watchmaking company in Tavannes, which took the name of the town. In 1870 master watchmaker Henri-Frédéric Sandoz (usually just Henri Sandoz born 1851 Le Locle, died 1913 Tavannes) founded a watch manufacturing company in Le Locle, Switzerland, in his own name: "Henri Sandoz and Co." Tavannes is in a French speaking canton so the s is silent: it should be pronounced ‘ta-van’. It is OK for two lids to have different marks because they are hinged to the body and are considered different pieces of silver - which is why they are individually marked in the first place. This removed the hallmarks, including the London Assay mark, but as the back was now modified and from two makers it could not be resubmitted for assay and could not have had 2 sets of marks. It is not in one orriginal piece the centre having been cut out and a cast silver disk with the Latin moto and a hero's laurel wreath expertly let into it. So the Dust cover is almost certainly original to the body.Īs was common the pendant was made by a specialist pendant maker, in this case by Charles Harrold & Co. The case was originally made by Thomas Clark and Alfred Ward of Kensington Rd Coventry ("C&W"), who I know from other examples were making cases for Errington watches at this time, the Errington ("C.H.E") mark having been cancelled in 1905. The highly decorated back lid has no marks at all.The pendant marks are difficult to read but look to be "CH", Birmingham 1911/12 and.The front cover has the makers mark "ATO" and London date marks for 1911/12.The dust cover has the makers mark "C & W" and London date marks for 1910 /11.
